Pebble Beach Spring Horse Show Derby Hill’s spring show season continued at Pebble Beach Spring horse show. Show managers Sally Hudson and Graves Cox went out of their way to ensure that all exhibitors had a great show experience. The grounds were well maintained and the show ran efficiently; all the staff were helpful and friendly. Even the weather smiled upon us, uncharacteristically bathing us in California sunshine for most of the week.
In the hunter arenas, Derby Hill’s Fenwick returned to the show ring in the Modified Open Hunter division.“Spot” finished up as Reserve Champion with Vanessa in the irons.Later in the week, Sarah Frushell piloted her 007 to Championship honors in the Children’s Hunter 13 & Under division, dominating the division with 3 wins over fences.Sarah also found success in the equitation ring with a 3rd place finish in the Taylor Harris Children’s Medal class, a win in the Junior Equitation Flat Championship 12-14 class, and a reserve tri-color in the Junior Equitation 12-14 division.

The jumper arenas were kept busy with Derby Hill horses and riders.Susan Meadows led off the week with success in the Level 5 jumpers aboard her Topper, ultimately earning the Championship in the division. Buddy piloted Susan’s Shenanigan to good ribbons in the Level 1 jumper arena. “Nan” is being groomed for her new career as an equitation horse with Lily Dashiell taking over the reins on April 1.
Ann Moeller is steadily improving her relationship with her new horse, Lucy Lux.She and “Princess” received good ribbons in the Level 4s, 5s and Modified Amateur jumpers.Ann continued to post great rounds with her Highlander.“Logan” and Ann were 2nd in a very large Level 4 class, got good ribbons in the Modified Amateur Jumpers and their Sunday win in the stake class clinched Reserve Championship honors.
Early in the week, Vanessa got the ride on Talisman Z, owned by Amy Slater, in the Level 1 Jumpers and earned a 3rd place finish. It was so great to see Dakota Gruener home on Spring Break from Brown University. Dakota made her jumper arena debut on her mother’s horse, Talisman Z.Dakota and “Tyler” won a Low Pre Adult class and finished 4th in another before an untimely case of scratches prevented the pair from completing the division. Dakota has returned east where she is keeping her riding skills sharp on the Brown Equestrian team. We wish Dakota and the team the best of luck at IHSA at nationals in Los Angeles! Buddy rode Jenny Barnes’ Curious George and the pair posted consistently smooth trips in the Level 4s.This horse is really coming in to his own and we look forward to watching his progress.
Adrienne Dixon took a brief break from UC Davis to show her two horses, Alize and Pom Pom.Adrienne and Alize took home a 2nd in the Low Junior/Amateur Owner Jumpers during the week, and finished off the week with a 6th place in the stake on Sunday. Adrienne and Pom Pom got back in to the swing with a 5th place finish in a Level 6 class and a 3rd in the Level 7s before tacking the 4’9” $5000 Pebble Beach Special which was a qualifying class for the North American Young Rider A Team. The pair had a very respectable round and finished just out of the ribbons. Adrienne also piloted a catch ride out of Ventana Farm to a 2nd place finish in the USEF talent search.
Show Circuit Clients Sherry Kozloff showed her Parzival in the Modified Amateur Jumpers and the Level 5 Jumpers, earning good ribbons in the Level 5 and a 3rd place finish in the Modified Amateur Jumpers.
The Taylor family joined us again with La Dolce Vita, piloted by Kenton, and Mocha Grande, with Lauren in the irons.Kenton and “Patrick” moved up a level handily, posting three 3rd finishes in the Adult Amateur Modified Jumpers where they ended up as Reserve Champion. Lauren once again dominated the Low Pre Children’s Jumpers, never finishing lower than 2nd place and taking home the Championship ribbon.
We were happy to see Zoe & Veronica Kornberg in the show aisle again. Zoe and Ethos started their year in the Low Junior/Amateur Owner Jumpers with a 3rd place finish.Moving up to the High Junior/Amateur Owners by the end of the week, the pair were 7th.We wish Zoe lots of luck this year with Rene Rios and hope we continue to have her in our show aisle from time to time.
