Barn News

We wish to welcome several new clients to Derby Hill. Ann Moeller has joined us with her three horses, Highlander, Lucy Lux and River Card.  Ann is showing in the Modified Amateur and Low Amateur/Owner Jumpers with intentions of moving up to the High Amateur/Owner Jumpers. As she moves up, she will reluctantly be listing River Card for sale to have the mare teach another rider the ropes in the jumper arena.

Jenny Barnes of Footnote Farm has entrusted us with the sale of her lovely young horse, Curious George. Buddy is currently showing George in the jumper arena. George may be tried at home or on the circuit.  Please see the Sales Page for additional information.

Lily Dashiell has recently come to us with her super mare, Sasha.  This talented amateur will continue to show her mare in the Low Amateur/Owner Jumpers and will also be taking over showing duties on Susan Meadow’s Shenanigan in the equitation and medals classes.  Susan is sadly offering “Nan” for sale to focus on the jumper arena.  More information on the mare is available on the Sales page.

Most recently, Iris Keenan has arrived at Derby Hill with her old campaigner, Arrow.  We will be searching for a mount for Iris to move up to the Junior Jumpers.  As Iris moves up to the larger division, Arrow will be available to give the next Junior or Amateur rider confidence in the jumper arena.  More information on Arrow will be available on the Sales page.

HITS Desert Circuit Update

After winter break, new and returning customers got the feel of the show ring again at HITS Desert Circuit in Thermal. Derby Hill attended the first half of the circuit and we were pleased with the improvements made at the facility. Footing in the jumper rings was fantastic and many areas had been spruced up with aesthetic improvements. The riders and horses were all impressed with the beautiful new jumps and the attention shown to ring decoration.

Despite losing two Sundays to inclement weather, everyone enjoyed getting back in the show ring to kick off the year. Sarah Frushell and her lovely 007 moved up to Children’s Hunters and the 3’ medals classes. She and “James” found success in the hunter ring with several top-3 finishes.  She finished her circuit with a 4th in the highly competitive Children’s Hunter Classic in Week 3.  She executed medal classes with a maturity beyond her experience and received callbacks and excellent ribbons in the Marshall & Sterling medal classes.

In the jumper arenas, several young horses gained some invaluable experience while bringing home some clear round ribbons in the starter level jumpers. Kenton Taylor piloted his own C’est La Vie while Vanessa Brown guided Amy Slater’s Talisman Z. In the slightly larger levels, we got to know Curious George in the show ring.  He promises to make a solid amateur or junior mount as his brave nature promises to be an asset in his next career move.

With limited schooling from Buddy, Sherry Kozloff and her Parzival moved up to the Modified Amateur Jumpers. This pair is showing consistent form with several good ribbons including 10th and 12th place finishes in week 2 and 3 Modified Amateur Classic in the Grand Prix arena.

Ann Moeller debuted with Derby Hill during Week 1 and spent a little time getting to know our program and newest mount, Lucy Lux. Highlander, Ann’s long-term partner, highlighted her circuit with a 2nd place finish, while Lucy Lux placed in the ribbons with Buddy in the irons. We’re excited about Ann’s future with both horses and are pleased she chose our program.

Adrienne Dixon and Alize kicked off their show season in the Modified Amateur Jumpers with a 2nd, and a 5th in the Week 3 Classic.

Susan Meadows and circuit celebrity, Topper, posted their usual scorching times for top ribbons in the Level 5 and Low Amateur/Owner Jumpers. Rounding out the jumper string, Adrienne and Pom Pom got back in the show arena in the Low Amateur/Owner Jumpers with much success including a win in the week 3 Classic. After this easing back in to their routine, the pair will now set their sights on the Young Riders Trials. We wish them much luck this season!
