The last week in April and the first week of May found many Derby Hill horses and riders at the Woodside Horse Park for the Spring Preview and Spring Classic horse shows. We were pleased that management took a proactive approach to grooming the rings, and fixing some issues with the footing. We also are ecstatic about the new water jump in the Grand Prix ring, and really appreciated the opportunities to utilize it afforded to our Jumpers in numerous classes as well as management allowing extra schooling over it on warm up day and at the end of each show day. As usual, the staff was accommodating, and two well run shows were accomplished.
The Preview had Sarah Frushell and her horse 007 and Lily Dashiell and Susan Meadow’s horse Shenanigan contending in the Equitation and Hunter arenas. Sarah once again rode well in the Children’s Hunters against a quality group of horses. Two 2nd’s, a 3rd, and a pair of 4th’s just kept her out of a tricolor for the final results. Sarah found herself in the majority of work-offs for the Medals and ended up with a 4th place finish in the Marshall Sterling Children’s Medal, a 4th place in the NorCal 3 Foot Medal, and a 2nd place standing in the Taylor Harris Children’s Medal.

Lily and "Nan" showed improvement over their first outing together, and the mare was starting to understand her new job. The pair posted a 2nd, 3rd, and 4th in the 3’3" Modified Amateur Hunters, and placed in several Amateur Medals. Lily rode her own Sasha to a 5th place finish in the 1.20 jumpers during week 1.
During week two, Sarah Frushell improved her previous week’s accomplishments by capturing Championship honors with her 007 in the Children’s Hunter 13 and Under Division posting 2 wins, and 3 2nd place finishes in the offered classes. She also continued to be a contender in the Medals, ultimately finishing 2nd in both the Marshall and Sterling Medal and the CPHA Child/ Adult Medal, and ribboning in both the NorCal 3 foot Medal and the Taylor Harris Children’s Medal.
Buddy started Jenny Barnes’ Curious George in the 1.10 meter division, earning 2nd and 5th place finishes. George was tried the remainder of the week, and was sold Iris Keenan, and we are happy to have the new pair remaining at Derby Hill. Iris looks forward to climbing the jumper ladder and we’re eager to see the pair’s progress.

Once again Adrienne Dixon and Alizé dominated the classics both weeks, proving how much they like the grand prix ring at this facility. During the two weeks, "Lance" was 3rd in the Junior/Amateur Owner Jumper Classic during week one and brought home the blue in the Woodside Open Jumper Classic on Sunday. In week 2, the pair shone, bringing home the blue in the Junior/Amateur Owner Classic.
Adrienne and Pom Pom weren’t far behind, with a 5th in the Junior/Amateur Owner Jumper Classic and a 3rd in the Woodside Open Jumper Classic during week one. Adrienne and Pom Pom posted another solid round in the Young Riders’ Trial.
Susan Meadows and Topper were in their usual top form for week one, bringing home a first place ribbon in the Junior/Amateur Owner Jumpers during the week. The pair finished at the top of a large field in the Junior/Amateur Owner Jumper Classic, and earned a 4th place finish in the Woodside Open Jumper Classic.

Ann Moeller rounded out the in- barn amateur ranks with a 5th place finish on Highlander in the 1.15 meter jumpers, and a 4th place in the 1.20 meter jumpers on Lucy Lux during week one. During week two, Ann and Lucy Lux upped the ante, tying for Reserve Champion in the 1.15 Modified Junior/Adult Amateur jumpers.
We were very happy to see regular show circuit clients Barb Ellison, Sherry Kozloff, Mary Tescornia, and Kenton & Lauren Taylor in the Derby Hill aisle again. Barb’s Andy, piloted by Kelli Johnston posted 1st and 8th place finishes in the 1.30 meter jumpers during week one, and a 3rd in the 1.20 meter jumpers during week two. Barb piloted Granne 17 to 6th and 7th place finishes in the 1.15 meter jumpers during week one. Barb and Marco earned a 6th place ribbon in the 1.20 meter jumpers, 2nd and 6th place ribbons in the Junior/Amateur Owner jumper division, and a 6th in the Junior/Amateur Owner Jumper Classic, all during week one. Kelli also rode Quinthina to 6th and 7th finishes in the 1.15 jumpers.
Sherry Kozloff and Parzival earned a 6th place ribbon in the 1.20 meter jumpers. We were all pleased with her yellow ribbon in her Junior/Amateur Owner Jumper debut with "Percy." Mary Tescornia and D’Alisco posted a 7th place finish in the Adult Amateur jumper division. Kenton Taylor and La Dolce Vita contributed many ribbons to the banner during week two, earning a red ribbon in the 1.0 meter jumpers, and two 2nd and a 4th place ribbons in the 1.0 meter Children’s/Adult Amateur Jumper division. Kenton’s dauther, Lauren, and her old standby Mocha Grande earned multiple ribbons during their week in the barn aisle.
